For the past several years, Honda plants have been replacing old fixtures with energy-efficient lighting, often reducing energy use by 50 percent per fixture. The plants are also working to reduce the number of fixtures in certain areas as processes change, while realigning controls to improve lighting management. These activities increase the ability to turn lighting off during non-production, and provide lighting in distinct areas as needed.

As with lighting, Honda plants have been improving management and control of HVAC systems to reduce energy usage. These include correct HVAC sizing as production systems change, and turning systems off during non-production.

Compressed air is used to operate some production equipment and is energy intensive to provide. Honda's compressed air activities focus on air management to provide the right pressure to the right areas at the right times. This includes reducing overall pressure and pressure during weekends, installing smaller systems to serve areas more efficiently, implementing cool-air intakes and turning off valves at machines. In addition, Honda has implemented checks to discover and eliminate leaks.

Honda installs highly efficient variable-frequency drives and impellers to optimize the management and flow of pumped fluids as conditions change. In 2007, Honda installed the efficient motors in systems that pump water, exhaust air and compressed air.

In support of activities to manage lighting, HVAC and compressed air, Honda is enhancing metering of electricity and natural gas to obtain better data. Metering in key areas helps identify the best locations for conservation projects and to measure the impact of changes and new systems.
